Our program:

1. “Memory of the World in One Sentence”, talk by prof. Bożena Shallcross (University of Chicago)

This talk addresses the story of the oldest Polish sentence and its contemporary transmission to a commonplace, useful object that aspires to be an artwork as well. This move is further complicated by the cited sentence’s series of shifts from the archived space of medieval The Henrician Book through the open gallery space to the privacy of one’s home.
My presentation reconstructs a leap from the narrative of labor to the narrative of a marketed artistic production and intimate leisure, as well as from the museum value to the use value. Along the way, I explore the artistic intervention in the late medieval scripted citation through additional steps that include a manipulation of its scale, the genre shift, and change of the material foundation as the artistic intervention results in the thick ink--cotton materiality of the pillowcase. Ultimately, the iconic (for Polish culture) text became the flat-ten object of Warholian mercantile boredom.

Main conceptual points: mobility of inscriptions and citations, everyday logosphere, textual objects, materialization, intracultural transfer, repetition, metonymy, speech and thing.

2. Questions, comments, discussion.

3. Centre for Creativity Research – plans, ideas, forthcoming events.
