PROGRAMME

1.  João Dionísio (University of Lisbon)
keynote: Creative reading, filling in the blanks

Abstract
Successive constructivist theories have decisively contributed to a revision of the notion of the reader from someone who is expected to passively decipher the meaning of a text to an agent who cooperates in the process of meaning making. Textual blanks, and the creativity inherent to filling them in, are responsible for this pas de deux involving text and reader, in a cooperation that has been variously envisaged by different scholars over the 20th century (Ingarden, Iser, Eco, among others). In this presentation a modernist poem and a contemporary sound sculpture will be interpreted according to fill-in-the-blank actions. Then, two readings of a document conveying a poem written in the 1950s will be tested against the assumptions that constructivist theories ascribe to those actions. This is meant as an experiment to see if creativity plays itself out in the same way when someone reads a published text and an archival document.
