keynote: The Creative Practice(s) of Musical Performance
This paper will explore some fundamental issues to do with musical performance, the discipline of performance studies, and research into musical creativity both in general and specifically in respect of performance. Reference will be made to two major research centres – CHARM (2004–09; www.charm.rhul.ac.uk) and CMPCP (2009–14; www.cmpcp.ac.uk) – with particular attention to a project on ‘Creative learning and “original” music performance’ which was conducted under the auspices of CMPCP. Conclusions will be drawn not only about how musicians’ practice might be made more creative, but also about the practice of research into creativity on a broader plane.
John Rink is Professor of Musical Performance Studies in the Cambridge Faculty of Music and the head of the Cambridge Centre for Musical Performance Studies. He studied at Princeton University, King's College London, and the University of Cambridge, where his doctoral research was on the evolution of tonal structure in Chopin's early music and its relation to improvisation. He also holds the Concert Recital Diploma and Premier Prix in piano from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. He specialises in the fields of performance studies, theory and analysis, and nineteenth-century studies. Author of many books (including The Practice of Performance: Studies in Musical Interpretation, 1995; Chopin: The Piano Concertos, 1997; Musical Performance: A Guide to Understanding, 2002) and General Editor of the five-book series Studies in Musical Performance as Creative Practice (Oxford University Press, 2017-18). He is Editor-in-Chief of The Complete Chopin – A New Critical Edition, as well as a member of the juries of the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw (2015 and 2021).
