TRANSLATION AND CULTURAL MEMORY

Francophone memory of the traumatic World War 2 experience are transmitted both by means of factual testimony and fictional work. In the talk I will have a closer look on two examples: Sarah Kofman’s autobiographical writing and Patric Modiano’s fiction in order to show how these media of cultural memory are translated into Dutch and English and Dutch and German respectively, and how the translations represent, perform and negotiate memories. What is the importance of particular translation strategies, of paratextual framing, of different horizons of expectation and reception for the transmission of cultural reminiscence? 
 
Désirée Schyns is professor of Translation and Translation Studies at Ghent University in Belgium. She has published on testimony and memory in literature, film and graphic novel. She is the author of La mémoire littéraire de la guerre d’Algérie dans la fiction algérienne francophone (2012) and co- editor of Translation in Exile (Special issue Cadernos de tradução, 2018), Reflections on poetry and translation, the poet Cees Nooteboom in translation (2018) and Translating the multilingual text (special issue Filter, tijdschrift over vertalen). She is also a translator of literature: her most recent translation is Marcel Proust’s A l’ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs into Dutch.
